Clarkston Community School District

From Superintendent Ryan: Important Update

From Superintendent Ryan: Important Update

Dear Clarkston Community Schools Families,

On Monday, March 16 we will be closing all K-12 schools in order to allow our staff to come together for contingency planning in response to COVID-19. The Early Childhood Center will remain open. Our administrators, teaching staff, curriculum coordinators, instructional technologists, and virtual learning team will begin collaborating on a plan to ensure teaching and learning continuity in the event of a prolonged school closure. At this time, we will also perform deep cleaning in all of our buildings, on all of our buses, and in our food service areas.

Given the ever-changing nature of this worldwide issue, it's clear to us that we need a Plan B.

If we must close school in the near future, we need to understand our capabilities and capacity for home learning and proactively conceptualize our plan for continued teaching and learning. I can say with 100% confidence that we have the infrastructure to keep moving forward in this way on a limited basis, for a limited time.

As I said in my note yesterday, we are preparing for all possible scenarios and we ask families to do the same. Please take time this weekend to make your own contingency plan for a school closure, keeping in mind things like childcare and technology resources.

Tomorrow at school, students will be asked to gather and take home personal items on campus in order to expedite the deep-cleaning process. We would like our classrooms, locker rooms, and hallways to be as clear as possible for cleaning and sanitization. This would also be a good time to bring home pencil boxes and book boxes to be disinfected and/or replaced.

We will provide you with continued updates in the coming days and weeks and will notify families of any updates using our usual channels for emergency announcements. All families will soon be receiving two emailed documents to review, complete, and return in order to participate in virtual learning with our district. These documents are the Educational Development Plan and the Virtual Learning Contract. Please make sure your ParentVue contact settings are up to date, and that you are following the district social media so that you are receiving all school communications. (Contact your child's building if you need to activate your ParentVue account). All communications will also be posted on the district website at

Because this is a rapidly evolving situation, our team has also created a special page on our website to serve as a hub of information for staff and families related to this issue:

Thank you for your support and understanding.
