Superintendent's Weekly Report 10/23/20

Metrics / Rationale ("Concentric Data Rings")

Superintendent's Comments:

"This week saw an increase in positive cases in our school community, as well as in our concentric rings of data (the greater Clarkston region, Oakland County, and the state). Within our school district boundaries, positive cases per 10,000 jumped from 15.1 last week to 27.7. This comes on the heels of a significant rise the previous week. Importantly, the 5-13 age group in Oakland County remains flat. We now have 17 active cases in our schools (10 students and 7 staff members). As a result, we also have 128 individuals in quarantine.

Contact tracing and mitigation strategies remain strong. With effective cleaning, mask wearing, handwashing, and social distancing in schools, our district's school-associated transmission rate is zero. Oakland County Health Department contact tracers have confirmed that none of the positive cases in our district were contracted or transmitted at school.

A deciding factor in our ability to continue to offer our current face-to-face and hybrid learning model is keeping students and staff in school. The more students and staff who are isolated or quarantined, the less stable we are in our current learning model. For this reason and those shared above, I am moving the Decision Meter toward the possibility of recommending a transition to distance learning in the weeks ahead. I will continue to monitor the data metrics above, meet with county epidemiologists and infectious disease experts, and evaluate emerging trends." - Dr. Ryan
