From the Superintendent: Celebrating our student success!

Students Playing a math game

Dear Clarkston Community Schools Families,

I have some great news to share with you. The M-STEP results are in, and the Clarkston data is something to celebrate.

District-wide, in third, fourth, and fifth grades, our students have shown an increase in proficiency in both math and ELA from 2021 to 2022.

While these statistics alone are something to be proud of, they are even more impressive when we compare ourselves to the county and state averages that have either stayed the same or decreased. I don’t say that to shed a negative light on other districts but to showcase our success in challenging times.

Our student success is not by accident. We have taken several steps to enhance our curriculum and how we serve our students. The implementation of our Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is working! Our subject area coordinators are providing professional learning to ensure our teachers utilize the most effective practices in the classroom. These instructional practices are supplemented by additional coaches, interventionists, and aides in our elementary schools, allowing us to meet students where they are and help them reach their maximum potential.

At CCS, our focus is on the whole child. Throughout our district, we have psychologists, social workers, and behavior interventionists supporting our students’ needs and providing them with the appropriate tools for academic and social success. Together these supports are building confidence in our students and showing positive results.

We know our work isn’t done, and the data shows us where we still have room for improvement. As we continue our efforts at the elementary level, we are now turning our focus to secondary. This year we have added a secondary literacy coach and a math coach. They will work alongside our subject area coordinators to serve and support our teachers with effective practices that will help our students achieve their personal best.

As always, thank you for all that you do. As parents, you are our partners in your child’s education. Your support is instrumental to their success, and I am grateful to be on this journey with you. Together, we will continue to make great strides!

Sincerely,

Dr. Shawn Ryan
