6th Grade Content Expectations

 

ü Understand ratios and rates

ü Apply ratios and rates in real-world and math problems

ü Add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit numbers and decimals

ü Find common factors and multiples

ü Understand the meaning of fractions and be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions

ü Find the percent of a number

ü Understand the meaning of negative numbers and be able to locate them on a number line

ü Recognize opposite signs of numbers and understand them as having opposite values.  Use in real-world contexts (e.g., temperature above/below zero, above/below sea level, credits/debts).

ü Understand ordering and absolute values of numbers

ü Graph coordinate points on a coordinate plane in all four quadrants

ü Recognize statistical questions to collect data.  Display numerical data on a number line, including dot plots, histograms, and box plots.  Summarize numerical data.

ü Use variables to represent two quantities in a real-world problem that change in relationship to one another, writing expressions and equations.

ü Generate and identify equivalent expressions applying properties, including the distributive property.

ü Solve one step equations.

ü Analyze the relationship between the dependent and independent variables in tables, graphs, and equations.

ü Find the area of triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons in real-world and mathematical problems.

ü Understand and find volumes.
