Once you have chosen a topic and the type of essay best suited to your topic, you must read example essays of that type. Print off only the pages you need.
While reading the example essays, you must take notes on the structure and style of the essay. Your annotations should not be about the content, as much as the decisions of the author.
Here are some suggested questions to answer as you read: How does the essay start and conclude? How are transitions made from one point to the next? How do examples and details support the thesis? Where is the thesis? How does the writer develop his/her points?
