Providing each and every student with an exceptional educational experience is the first and foremost responsibility of the Clarkston Schools. Our mission begins with the premise that we will ensure learning, while challenging all individuals to exceed their own expectation; and we are steadfast in our conviction that learning is a lifelong process.

The Clarkston School District recognizes that individuals learn in different ways and at different rates. We respect the uniqueness of each learner. We also acknowledge the fact that the most successful schools are those that under- stand the need for an active partnership between the school and its community. The information contained in this brochure is designed to strengthen our partnership with parents/guardians. After all, effective partnerships rely on understanding and mutual support.

First of all, we hope you will become familiar with the learning goals that have been established at your child's grade level. Secondly, we invite you to work closely with school personnel in helping your son/daughter "reach for the stars." Parental expectations do influence academic achievement! So, monitor your youngster's progress; assess his/her needs on a regular basis and communicate with the classroom teacher.

As you examine the content of this publication, you will notice that the expectations for language arts, math, science, social studies, physical education/health, art and music are included for your child's specific grade. Separate publications outline the expectations for the other elementary grades.

While having a long-standing reputation for quality teaching and learning, the District must seek continuous improvement to remain effective in helping students reach their potential. This clear definition of district-wide expectations for our elementary students is another step Clarkston Schools has taken to maintain its position as an educational leader.

Your work at home and the work of teachers and support personnel at school will enable us to continue to provide the level of excellence that has characterized our service to the community's students.
