Students in fourth grade are introduced to a variety of genres. In a reader's workshop setting, students are encouraged to read "Just Right" books and conference with the teacher to check for understanding. We also read Weekly Reader and Story Works magazines. It is our goal for students to read and understand a variety of literature through read alouds, independent reading and shared reading practices. |

Students write daily in a workshop setting. Students generate ideas from their personal lives so that they can effectively craft written pieces that have personal meaning. Students write a personal narrative, an essay, poetry, and fiction. |

For spelling, students follow the Month-By-Month Phonics program. This program is intended to help students become fluent decoders and spellers. Students practice high frequency words and study how prefixes and suffixes can help make spelling less difficult. Please look on the spelling handouts for the upcoming patterns. |

Students in fourth grade learn many math concepts: data, geometry,place value, products, factors, predicting, patterns, decimals, shapes, solids, and fractions are a few! Please continue to practice addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts at home regularly. |

Students will learn a variety of hands-on curriculum. The year begins with forms of energy including electricity, magnetism and heat energy. We continue with matter and the Earth, moon and sun. We complete our year with crayfish and animal habitats. |

The focus of fourth grade social studies is Geography. Students learn the five themes of geography and a little about each region of the United States.
