Ask about our shared reading book of the week. Ask your child to retell in order what happened in the book.
-
Continue to read to and with your child every night. You are helping your child to love books and to become a lifelong learner. Remember to follow the 3-day plan with the take-home, leveled books that come home on Mondays (starting in October).
Discuss with your child the books he/she has read this week during Quiet Reading time. Ask them what strategies they are using to solve unknown words. Ask what their favorite book Mrs. Borgula read aloud is?
Help your child use the Reading Strategies: 1. Use the picture. 2. Use the letters and sounds. 3. Look for CHUNKS or little words. 4. Read past it. What makes sense? 5. Read it again.
Don't forget about comprehension! It is essential that your child knows what they are reading. After reading with or to your child, have them retell the story to you. Remind them to use character names and story language. Have them sequence the events in the story. |

Social Studies is a very important part of every day. We are learning to work as a team and how to respect all others. We are also learning how to be "problem solvers," which is a skill that will be valuable for life. Ask your child what s/he does when a problem arises.
This year our Social Studies curriculum centers around the theme of community. Using this theme, we will explore the areas of geography, civics, economics, local history, and civic involvement.
