News From Mrs. Stevenson
November 26, 2013
We begin the new marking period when students return on Monday, December 2. Report cards will be sent home Friday, December 6, with your child.
We begin our focus on non-fiction/informational reading and writing. Please encourage your child to select and try books in this genre since most tend to read non-fiction. This is a very important focus since what students read in classes for science and social studies next year will be in this genre. It helps prepare them for understanding how to read for learning and studying.
We continue to work on vocabulary for a few more weeks. We are working on top fifth grade vocabulary words needed to help become successful on tests and for increasing reading comprehension. We will then rotate between spelling and vocabulary.
Students will be working on division. We continue to push math fact fluency and multiplication of larger numbers to become proficient. Mrs. Plancon and I will be switching which students we work with for this marking period. Some students will also be shifted to be placed in a classroom where it is a better match for their learning success. All classrooms have the same tests, we just have different rates and approaches to reaching the end.
We are finishing up on our last human body system, which is the digestive system.
We are in Chapter 6 learning about the first English settlements in North America.
-Please check that your child is bringing and wearing the appropriate clothing. It is amazing how many haven’t had gloves/mittens, or even coats?? Our classroom also tends to be cold so layers are needed.
