SMS PTA HONORS KIMBERLY PRENTICE AS THE
The Sashabaw Middle School PTA is pleased to honor Kimberly Prentice, Applied Technology teacher, as the 2014 Difference-Maker at SMS. Kim is a passionate advocate for her colleagues and students at SMS.
Kim is the driving force behind scheduling for Career Day, a PTA-sponsored event for 7th graders. She created an electronic system that allows students to sign up for their preferred sessions at school, as well as generates all reports and schedules for the administration and teachers. This saves significant time and effort, and makes Career Day a true partnership between parents and staff. This year proved particularly challenging. Kim found herself facing major back surgery unexpectedly that would keep her out of the building for several weeks, yet continued to orchestrate Career Day scheduling and work out program bugs from her doctor's office. While the same can be said most years, this year's event most assuredly could not have happened without Kim Prentice.
Kim is also the primary reason the mini-grant program at SMS saw a significant increase in funds awarded this year. Because of her willingness to speak up on behalf of the SMS staff and share concerns about the way the mini-grant process worked in the past, the system for applying for and awarding mini-grants was modified to be more inclusive and proactive. The PTA awarded $9,000 in mini-grants to teachers and staff this year, rewarding creative teaching and learning ideas and impacting every student in the building.
The Difference-Maker Awards were created by the Clarkston PTA Council to recognize a teacher or staff member in each PTA building who embodies the mission and spirit of PTA. Kim will be recognized with other Difference-Makers at a meeting of the Clarkston Board of Education in May.
